FIRST GEAR & ON TWO WHEELS

Keeping young people safer on our roads.

Young people under the age of 25 represent 10% of all drivers yet they have 25% of the accidents. This means that they are 3 times more likely to be involved in an accident than any other group of drivers. Momentum is a training package delivered by Youth Clubs Hampshire & Isle of Wight specifically designed to combat this appalling state of affairs. Momentum is offered to young people who are within six months of being legally able to drive (16.5 years for cars and 15.5 years for motor cycles)

  • Professional First Aid Trainers
  • Vehicle Maintenance Instructors
  • Qualified Driving/Riding Instructors

    Momentum comprises 2 separate 30-hour courses…
    First Gear for pre-learner drivers on Two Wheels for pre-learner motorcyclists.

    Both courses aim to make young people socially and environmentally aware of the impact of vehicle use. They also recognise that the majority of young people will soon become drivers and thus the courses have the parallel aim to teach the responsibilities of vehicle use, including road safety, vehicle maintenance, typical costs and the price of vehicle crime. Above all the courses are intended to help young people to develop positive attitudes to their own self-preservation and that of others.

    Momentum comprises of three modules:

  • In the Mind
  • Under the Bonnet/Tank
  • Behind the Wheel/Handle Bars

    Follow up research shows that having attended a Momentum course, young people have a significantly lower risk of being involved in a road traffic incident

    First Gear (car drivers) For a group of 8 young people minimum £2888.00 Per young person £361.00 (hourly rate of £12.03)

    On Two Wheels (motorcyclists) (to include CBT certificate)
    For a group of 8 young people minimum £3438.00 Per young person £429.75 (hourly rate of £14.33)

    **Groups affiliated to Youth Clubs Hampshire and Isle of Wight may benefit from a subsidy

    The Course offers the following benefits:

    SELF ESTEEM
    Being part of and contributing towards a positive experience is a great boost to self esteem. New skills gained and new challenges met.

    HEALTH
    Increases the survivability of young people. Young people under 25 yrs 4 times more likely to an accident in a road vehicle that any other group of drivers. This is reduced to same odds as other groups after this course.

    ENGAGEMENT
    95% retention rate entirely appropriate to the perceived needs of the participants.

    EMPLOYABILITY
    Driving seen by young people as an essential employment skill. Access to personal transport seen as a necessity not a luxury.

    VALUES & ETHICS
    Momentum asks young people questions about the ethics of vehicle ownership and use. Promoting responsible use.

    ACHIEVEMENT
    Accreditation to OCN Level 1 Unit 1. Maps to D of E skill section. As a challenge for bronze Youth Achievement Awards
